Good morning, South Dublin!

Happy Pancake Tuesday! 🥞

While most of the Southside was waking up to the smell of batter and lemons, Dún Laoghaire had a significantly more dramatic Monday morning. We’ve also got the "commuter's warning" for anyone using the N11 this week and a new reason to visit Rathmines tonight.

⛅ WEATHER Today:

Today: 🌦️ Showers & Sunny Spells | High: 9°C | Low: 1°C

The vibe: A classic "flip a coin" day. Bring the umbrella if you're heading to the 3Arena or a pancake race, but it’ll be crisp and bright in between the clouds.

📣 THE BIG SCOOP The Two-Hour "Roof Standoff" in Dún Laoghaire

The Gist: Residents in a quiet Dún Laoghaire housing estate had a front-row seat to a dramatic Garda standoff yesterday morning.

The Details:

  • The Incident: A man was observed on the roof of a residential property allegedly in possession of fireworks.

  • The Chaos: Reports state he was allegedly throwing roof tiles at Gardai who had surrounded the property.

  • The Response: The Emergency Response Unit (ERU) was deployed, and after two hours of negotiations (and plenty of viral videos from neighbors), the man was safely removed and arrested.

Why it matters: It’s not your average Monday morning in the coastal suburbs. Local residents are still talking about the heavy Garda presence that locked down the estate until noon.

📰 SOUTH SIDE SNIPPETS

  • 🥡 Rathmines Street Food: Have you tried Hawker on Rathgar Road yet? From the team behind the legendary Hang Dai, it’s a modern street-food joint that just opened. The "Cheeseburger Spring Rolls" are the current office obsession.

  • 🏮 Cherrywood Lanterns: To mark the final days of the Lunar New Year, the Cherrywood business parks are hosting a "Lantern Walk" tonight. A great way to burn off the pancakes with the kids during mid-term.

  • ⚽ Tallaght's Big Friday: Tickets for the Ireland vs. France women's match this Friday at Tallaght Stadium are officially "Limited Availability." If you want to see the Girls in Green, book your seats by lunch today.

  • 🎬 Dalkey Celeb Watch: The Dublin International Film Festival (DIFF) kicks off this Thursday. Word on the street (and at the Forty Foot) is that several A-listers have already checked into local Dalkey boutiques.

  • 🌳 Stepaside Greenery: The DLR County Council has just announced a new "Pollinator Plan" for the Fernhill Gardens. Expect more wildflowers and fewer mowers this spring—great news for local biodiversity.

🚧 COMMUTER CRUNCH: The N11 "Night Shift"

Heading south toward Bray or Dalkey? Read this.

Starting Monday (Feb 16) and running until Friday (Feb 27), there is a Full Night Closure of the N11 between Junction 7 and Junction 11.

  • The Time: 9:00 PM – 6:00 AM daily.

  • The Impact: If you’re heading home from the city late, you’ll be diverted through local roads.

  • Bus Alert: Bus Éireann Route 131 and 133 will be skipping stops like Kilmacanogue and Kilmurry during these hours. Check the TFI app before you get stranded in the cold!

🥞 THE SOUTHSIDE PANCAKE INDEX

Where to get your fix today (and avoid the queues):

  • 📍 Ranelagh: Lemon & Duke (Wait time: High). If the queue is too long, sprint to Dillinger’s for their American-style stack.

  • 📍 Dún Laoghaire: Póg on the main street. They are doing "Bottomless Pancakes" all day. Yes, really.

  • 📍 Tallaght: The Peachtree East. Their "Red Velvet" stack is legendary in D24.

  • 📍 Stepaside: Woodruff. For a more "gourmet" savory crepe if you don't have a sweet tooth.

  • 📍 Dalkey: Select Stores. Grab a healthy (but delicious) oat pancake and eat it on a walk up Killiney Hill.

In case you missed it

📅 WHAT'S ON (The Tuesday Planner)

Family: Junior Einsteins Science Club @ Glenalbyn House, Stillorgan | 10:00 AM | Mid-term science camps for kids who like to blow things up (safely).

The Republic of Ireland Women's Team plays France “Tallaght Stadium“ this Friday (Feb 20)

The morning sun hitting the boats in Dún Laoghaire harbor—looking a lot more peaceful today than it did yesterday morning!
